Earth Day 2020!

Today is Earth Day! Earth Day is a day to reflect or take action on being more environmentally friendly.

I’ve been really into renewable transportation recently. I have been really obsessed with electric transportation these past few weeks and I’ve been researching on a bunch of different ways we can move towards an electric commute. California generates its electricity 100% on renewable sources like dams and wind power, so electric vehicles are the future!

I recently came across a video on the Corridor Crew Youtube channel where Wren makes an electric bike for his wife. This inspired me to get into electric transportation because of how easy and cheap it is. He was able to convert a simple fixed gear road bike into an electric bike with a little bit of time, 3D printing, and a few hundred dollars! He makes a really good analogy of the cost of a gas car, Tesla Model S, and an electric bike. To travel 300 miles, the gas car would cost upwards of $60, the Tesla would cost $10, and the electric bike would only cost $1! This totally blew my mind because since commuting on an electric bike would be way more efficient because of a whole bunch of factors, such as lower aerodynamic drag, less weight, smaller motor, and more.

All this new knowledge inspired me to start my own electric vehicle build. I’m planning on building an electric longboard as a start. It turns out there’s a pretty big community around DIY e-skate. I plan to use this as a learning opportunity, and hopefully I can build my own electric bike one day. I could use it to commute to work and save on a ton of money, let alone save the environment!

Tom Stanton on Youtube also has great videos documenting his journey on developing a 3D printable electric bike conversion. He’s been a real inspiration for me as well. I’ll link all the videos down below!
